Frank MacDonald was born in 1912 and died in 2000. His father was a Presbyterian minister, and it was from him that Frank learned his zeal for education and all things Scottish. He studied at the University of Glasgow, where he graduated with degrees in History and English. In the 1940s, his love of Scotland led to a lifelong association with the Scottish National Trust
In 1968 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He is best known for his many books on Scotland and its people, including the best-selling The Scots: Their History, Culture and Character (1960). He is buried in Crossmyloof Kirk in Edinburgh.
